Canyon Rider puts a lone figure on horseback into the vast, layered terrain of canyon country — the rider small against the scale of the rock, moving through a landscape that dwarfs everything human and makes it beautiful anyway. Rasberry captures the relationship between rider and canyon with the confidence of a painter who understands both, the composition balanced between the intimacy of the figure and the grandeur of the setting.

Original oil, 12"H × 16"W. Available through Sage Creek Gallery.

About the artist

John Rasberry’s landscape oil paintings invoke traditional representational art at its finest. He is inspired by landscapes, people at work and scenes of everyday life. “I paint what I love – dramatic  lighting on landscapes and lifescapes,” says John. “Capturing the ‘golden hour’ of the morning and  evening light or the mood of a foggy morning or stormy afternoon is everything. That moment can  be elusive and may only last a few seconds. It can disappear and reappear like magic. It’s my inspiration. I strive to capture and convey that sense of place along with the feeling of that moment. My  hope is that when people view my paintings they will feel that fleeting moment and share my  experience. When I hear someone say ‘I feel like I’ve been there,’ I know I have made a connection  and communicated my experience through my art.”

John grew up in Texas, where he still resides. He was captivated and inspired by the artwork created  by two of his aunts who were talented artists. In grade school, his work often showed up in his  school’s display cases, and in junior high, he won scholarships to summer art camps. John graduated from Howard Payne University in Texas with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in communication  design, and he pursued a career in graphic design, and co-owned a successful design business. He  also taught design and illustration classes at Texas Tech University School of Art.

During his college days, John met and married his wife Karen, who is his biggest fan and helpful critic. They have two daughters, a granddaughter and four grandsons. John is a member of the Oil Painters of America. He has participated in numerous exhibitions with  Oil Painters of America, California Art Club, Greenhouse Gallery Salon International and American Plains Artists.
